Character Sketch for animation

A sketch of a little servant inspired by the Disney style. I am planning to animate him for a personal piece as a practice. :)

Asia mall project - Young Superhero Designs

A while ago, I worked on a freelance job with Calvin, an FYP groupmate of mine. We were asked to design 4 characters based on some Asia mall shopping malls in Singapore. They're supposed to be the 'mascots' of each mall, with a Superhero Christmas theme in general.

After some pre-design research and discussion, I focused more on the female superheroes while Calvin designed the male ones. The character attributes came from the malls' respective descriptions and their functions to the community. We were asked to reference heavily on Teen Titans for the concept.

Hougang mall, for example, is the community mall catering to a broad range of customers and necessities. Century Square is the ladies mall with its focus on fashion, wellness and beauty.

Sort of History-inspired characters

Western and Asian Art History modules
+ all the discussions about Renaissance, Greek sculptures, Gothic Art and Orientalism
+ my own obsessive fascination with fantasy, medieval periods and ancient civilisations
=
THIS.

...and THIS.

I would love to design fantasy game characters! \o/

'A Cloudy Conundrum' Creatures =B

The pre-production research and exploration phase of this project gave birth to tons of absurd, weird and ugly-fascinating creature designs.

As we pondered upon what beings might live up in the sky on clouds, each of us attempted our own take on the creatures we named 'Smores'.

Which (as we found out way later when wiki-ing) was an amazing coincidental reference to real-life s'mores - a dessert with a roasted marshmallow and a layer of chocolate sandwiched between two pieces of graham crackers.

This is my part.

The Tortoise Prince and his Hare

Black/White illustration

Just a fun little idea of a Mr. Prince Tortoise and his little Hare-y sidekick (mini-sized) roaming the lands and having little adventures of their own.

Mr. Abracadabra and His Dumbdog

A simple sketch of the magician and his princely dumbdog.
They are the spazzztastic, mysterious main characters of a circus-themed short story (which still remains undeveloped to this date).

Developments...and a new char.

...the calm and quiet intellectual,

Orchid Hood

Exploration of the Splash.

Orchid Lion in Battle Mode. Rawr.

Trying to be cool and intimidating.

.....or maybe a little too fierce. This shade of red for him? Crossed out.

And then comes...

The birth of the...

Developmental sketches

More sketches, based on the 'Vanda Miss Joaquim', Singapore's National Flower.

Slightly feminine-cool version...with white misty flames around her. Superpowers!

Red Splash: ...like a blob of red and white paint splattered.

Other designs.

SYOG Mascot - Initial Ideas

These are the very first 3 designs I've done for the Singapore Youth Olympic Games 2010 Workshop.

Criteria:
'Form Follows Function'
Singapore-related: Culture, colours etc.
Youth-oriented: Vibrant, spirited, cool...
May or may not be sporty, but certainly not a couch potato.

'Onionhead'

'Orchid...monkey?'

'Ah Boy'

Mini Creature design

When I'd applied for Gambit's Summer Program, one of the test questions required creating a mini pixel creature with the mouth as its main weapon.

I've deliberated between the two, but decided on the second one ultimately because it looks more distinct when shrunk, and I like the seemingly-cute/innocent-but-actually-very-dangerous-combination.

I did not get in, but it was well worth a try. :)

How to Plant a Flower - The Manual

In the graphic storytelling aka. comic class taught to us by Sonny Liew (yes, the awesome comic artist!), we were asked to come up with an instruction manual with no words, and we were told to do it in as creative a manner as we could.

Proudly presenting...the one-page manual of How To Plant A Flower.

Papillon

3 characters, designed for the Graphic Storytelling class's Final Project.

The poor, starving boy and his pet Papillon roam the city, homeless and alone. They stumbled upon a secret clearing one day out at the countryside, where a piano under the vines and the appearance of a mysterious young woman changed their lives from then on.

The 'Beach Boy' Chu

The Beach Boy is a Vietnamese legend of love and sacrifice. Chu is the poor orphaned boy in the tale, and his characteristics: Kind, young, gentle, tanned skin and dark long hair.

This was done in the pre-production stage of a funded research project called 'Tradigital Mythmaking'.
